Icon Maker
I created a simple tool that will allow you to easily create a livejournal icon. Not only does it resize an image below 100x100 but you can add a border and text to your icon. There are also bookmarklets that will allow you to instantly create an icon with the click of a button. Feel free to pass the link along.

http://co.ntagio.us/eljay/iconmaker/

Known Issues:
  • Cannot upload files over 8MB, That's per my host, I can't do anything about it.
  • Some special characters won't show up on the image and you may lose some of the text.

If you have any questions on the icon maker or find any problems please post them here.

FINALLY updated for FF 3.0 (is everyone happy now?)

It doesn't seem to work for image files that don't have extentions...what I mean is like the URL for my icon that I am using in this post is http://www.livejournal.com/userpic/8375647/745867 so it doesn't work.

Also, if you use an image that is less than 100 pixels in either the length or width, it does not edit the image size.

I took the easy way out when working with files, rather then checking the header to find out what file type it is I looked at the extension. So if it doesn't have an extension it doesn't know what file type it is and you get an error. I may update it later today to check the header, we'll see.

Thanks! you just helped me track down another bug. It wasn't recognizing the .JPG as a file because it was upper case. I fixed that and it seems to work.

Nice tool. I've been using it to make icons for my webpage bios, as opposed to LJ icons, but. . .
But something seems to have come up with the cropping feature. I can do the first click okay, but the image just vanishes and won't let me finish cropping. *is confused*

This is a strange issue. I'm working on an update to the crop feature and hopefully it will help. If you want to create a new icon again and include your livejournal username I can track it on the backend and see if I can figure out what is happening.

Some special characters won't show up on the image and you may lose some of the text.

An apostrophe is considered a "special character"?! if I type phrases that contain words like "It's" or "I've", none of the text shows up at all.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]lechatron
2005-03-09 10:57 am UTC (link)
' is a reserved character in PHP, I can escape the character but then you'd end up with "It\'s" and "I\'ve." I don't know why NONE of the text shows up when an apostrophe is used. I haven't had a chance to make a work around for it yet.

the pictures i have are bmp and when i try to make them my user picture for lj it says "Files of type BMP are not supported. You can only upload GIF, PNG or JPG files. Nearly all image/photo programs can do this conversion for you."
do you know what programs to use so i can make this conversion?

On the PC you can use MS Paint to convert the files to .JPG. Just open them and choose "save as..." Then in the "save as" window you should see a dropdown menu that says "save as type:" Select "JPEG (*.JPG, *.JPEG, *.JPE, *.JFIF)" Then give it a name with a ".JPG" extension and click "save"

Hope that helps.

After you upload the image and you've made all the changes you want, click the finish button. It should bring you to a page that will let you upload the image directly to your journal. Or you can just right click on the icon and select "save picture as..." and save it locally. Then you can upload it here.

If that doesn't help, create another icon and be sure to include your lj user name in the form so I can track it. Then let me know at what point you get stuck and I can see if I can help you out.

I don't have access to the cookie left by livejournal to tell that you're logged in. The note about needing to be logged in is just to let you know that if you try to upload the image directly and you're not logged into lj it won't work. If you're logged in there is no problem automatically uploading the image (if you have an empty slot for another icon).

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]lechatron

I found the image you had done that was over 40K and shrunk it down so it was below 40K. Here is the link to it. (if it still says it's over 40K try clearing your cache and reloading hte page) Eventually there will be a button you can click if your image is over 40K and it will atempt to resize the image down enough so it's below 40K. In this case the pixels didn't affect the size, it was the compression of the originial JPG image.

Great little program, I've always wanted to make icons for my journals and such but they never came out well.Your program makes it so easy. May I make a few suggestions for the next version? Perhaps add some filters, like emboss, sepia, oil paint or negative etc, to make the picture look different. And more text fonts would be nice.

Again a great program!

Hi.

I like the concept of your extension. However, I have tried to make an icon, and I go through the steps until I get to "done" or "finish," or whatever it says.

Where does the icon go and how can I access it to use it?
